Favicons

Favicons are link icons that uniquely identify a certain website. Not all websites have a favicon so many links will be depicted with the standard Internet Explorer (IE) icon. If you do not have any favicons in your IE favorites panel then add our website (http://www.favorez.com) to your IE favorites and see who pops up... choosy Chip the picky bird!

Temporary internet files

The Favorez Repair Favicons function has been created to counteract a bad habit of IE. IE stores any downloaded favicons in a folder on your hard disc together with other content such as cached internet web pages. When you need to clean up your temporary internet files, e.g. to save disc space, your favicons will be thrown away as well!

Repair

Run Repair Favicons in the Favorez Options dialog box to download all known favicons for your links from the remote servers where they originally came from. Occasionally it is necessary to restart IE for any changes to take effect.

This function may or may not actually update any of your link icons. This depends on several things. First of all you need to have at least one favorites link with an associated favicon that has not been repaired before. Furthermore, you need to have an active connection to the internet and the remote server must be up and running during repair. If you see a message like "downloading favicon from www.domain.com" but no favicons get updated eventually, then run Repair Favicons again at a later time, the remote server may be down only temporarily.

Note

Favicons that have been repaired by Favorez can no longer be thrown away by IE so you can delete your temporary internet files without any worries.

Favicon folder

Favorez stores favicons in a folder next to your temporary internet files. To find out the exact path to your favicons right click a link in your IE favorites panel and choose Properties. Then click the Change Icon... button and you will see the exact path to the favicon at the top of the dialog box that pops up.

Technical note

Favicons must be stored in some folder that is not system dependent or you would loose your favicons on a Windows network with roaming profiles enabled. The Repair Favicons function automatically creates a favicon folder that meets this requirement.
